What area of online marketing do you think is best to get into currently?

Pip (Philippa) Seymour

Owner at Seymour Digital Media

Gareth McGurgan:

Gareth McGurgan I work at SaySo For Good where we monetize traffic via paid Market Research surveys. Last year we managed to convert about 1.7mil surveys from an inventory of around 27mil possible conversions, so there is huge scope for growth there, particularly in the mobile device sector. We are constantly looking for publishers with enough volume to satisfy our demand, so perhaps one good option would be in generating and selling traffic, another might be to set up and optimise a GPT site that could prioritise user experience.

 AJ Richards:

I think video Marketing is a niche to be involved with right now.

Manon PELAZZA:

Depends on objective but for more natural trafic I would say SEO (be careful to be mobile oriented since mobile sales will rise), for more conversions I would say integrating personalization's solutions for content (people need customized quality content) and improving customer online service.

Zachary Moore:

As a freelance writer, I've noticed there's a large demand for specialty writers. The SEO changes reward in-depth and engaging content. I think it's a good thing for the web.

Lawrence Ladomery:

Marketing automation is relatively new and growing fast.

Pat McCann:

There' no one source that covers all bases. Search & SEO may not rank high enough to produce the most potential customers. You'll need to research each client's customer segment to determine their interests and search preferences. For example recent Borrell Associates research shows LinkedIn produces the most B2B leads. Millennials do most of their searches on mobile and tablet so you'll need readable content & visuals; they are often influenced by social media as well as ratings and reviews; they tend to ignore paid ads. Research competitor search terms on Spyfu for words and phrases and their other media to create client content that' s relevant and engaging. Use that content in website, social media, blogs, e-mails, etc., as appropriate for the target audience. This will be ongoing as there are new sources and behavior changes. Be ready to respond immediately to respond prospect inquiries with benefit (make you money, save you money, improve your services/processes.

Agree with Daryl Chambers on this one. Big data analytics is so critical and so few skilled at it.

Seymour Wow, amazing responses. Great input! You've all given me so much to think about (and many more questions to get answered). I am delighted that people chimed in. Thanks for taking the time :)

Eric Steckel:

This topic is great, thanks for asking. I am currently in the midst of a certificate degree in Digital Analytics and Website Intelligence through the University of British Columbia. While it's not an altogether new practice, it seems that there is a big need for data analysts. I think that there are others as well, but this is one that can really set a marketer apart if they have a strong interest in analysis.

Sandy Jr. Albaytar:

Social media. It's an area with your clients' interest at the core. You can improve your business by analysing how people respond to you. I don't think any other platform can give voice to your customers more than social media can. If you manage to be really good at it, it can take care of your advertising and public relations. It can improve your SEO via social signals and the potential to earn links. And it's free (unlike PPC, etc.). If I have to choose which area to master, this would be the top priority.

Mitch Rezman:

Unless you're looking at things holistically - don't bother jumping in -SEO is tied to SEM - is tied to social is tied to email (batch & blast/segmentation/triggered/autoresponders/abandonment) metrics - UX - i can go on but if you're not looking at everything when marketing for a site your view is that of a peep hole in an entrance door.

Daryl Chambers:

Mitch Rezman - the intent of the OPs question was to foster a discussion on the relative merits of the various components of digital marketing. Of course it is best to not silo your skills into a single area and naturally it is best to approach digital marketing holistically...but that was not the intent of the question posed. Why try to shut down a conversation with obvious comments that are unrelated to the question?

 Wiehan Britz:

Social media or Paid Advertising. Quickest drivers of marketing success | easiest to sell | easy tactic to run with automation software | large quantity of job opportunities | the side of online marketing that clients actually understand unlike SEO (client education becomes a shorter cycle) | geared towards lead generation and you can tie it in with measuring return on investment | market to specific audiences using audience targeting... I personally like the idea of pipeline marketing whereby you attract, nurture, convert and retain for maximum marketing ROI.

Daryl Chambers:

Well I started in SEO in 98 and with 18 years in the game I find SEO is second nature but as per my first comment I believe data is the next big revolution and we are working on developing a suite of tools to make big data available to small to medium businesses as well as agencies.

 Wiehan Britz:

Good point and exciting times lies ahead for you and your team. All the reason why all marketers MUST learn JavaScript. You take data collection from 4 up to 10000 on a measuring scale. I myself still need to learn JavaScript to effectively setup tracking for more powerful data collection and I reckon API integrations is also a valuable skillset to have.

Use that content in website, social media, blogs, e-mails, etc., as appropriate for the target audience. This will be ongoing as there are new sources and behavior changes. Agree with Daryl Chambers on this one. Big data analytics is so critical and so few skilled at it.

Seymour Wow, amazing responses. Great input! You've all given me so much to think about (and many more questions to get answered). I am delighted that people chimed in. Thanks for taking the time :)

Social media or Paid Advertising. Quickest drivers of marketing success | easiest to sell | easy tactic to run with automation software | large quantity of job opportunities | the side of online marketing that clients actually understand unlike SEO (client education becomes a shorter cycle) | geared towards lead generation and you can tie it in with measuring return on investment | market to specific audiences using audience targeting... I personally like the idea of pipeline marketing whereby you attract, nurture, convert and retain for maximum marketing ROI.

Well I started in SEO in 98 and with 18 years in the game I find SEO is second nature but as per my first comment I believe data is the next big revolution and we are working on developing a suite of tools to make big data available to small to medium businesses as well as agencies.
